Cedar City, Utah is in Iron County and is the home of Southern Utah University, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and other popular events. The city is located in the southeast Great Basin and has an elevation of 5,846. Mormon pioneers settled in 1851 with the mission of building an iron works. They settled midway between iron deposits and coal resources. In 1855 a new site was established closer to the iron works, and on this site is where the current city exists. Cedar City was incorporated in 1868 and today has approximately 31,000 people who call it home.
Cedar City’s high elevation makes it great for outdoor activities throughout the year. From winter sports to warm weather hiking, camping, climbing, and biking, those who love being outdoors will find something to enjoy. Great resorts are nearby, and the Southern Utah University gives the city a vibrant college town atmosphere. Cedar City claims two nicknames: Gateway to the National Parks, and Festival City, USA. As a gateway to the parks, Cedar City is an hour from Zion, three hours from Capitol Reef, ninety minutes from Bryce Canyon, and thirty minutes from Cedar Breaks National Monument in the Dixie National Forest. It earned its nickname as a festival city because there are Shakespeare festivals, music festivals, livestock festivals, film festivals, and even festivals for wildflowers here. Included in the festivals, you’ll also find summer sports, rodeos, bike races, and holiday parades.
Adding to the area's allure, great skiing can be found forty minutes from Cedar City at Brian Head Resort. Beyond skiing, this family-friendly resort also has disc golf, biking, live music and a variety of both summer and winter activities. In addition to the tremendous outdoor options and the cultural venues, there are many fabulous restaurants in Cedar City, serving up everything from pizza and barbeque to modern American cuisines and Mexican specialties.
Cedar City real estate options include a variety of different single-family styles, including ranch, cottages, and more contemporary homes. Typical Cedar City properties have three to six bedrooms.
