Santa Clara, Utah is a city in Washington County, Utah. The area was settled in 1854 when the Mormon Jacob Hamblin was sent to establish a mission to the Paiute, and a community was set up in Santa Clara. Fort Clara was built by those first setters in 1855-1856. Swiss Mormons arrived in 1861, but when the Clara River flooded it destroyed the fort and many of the other buildings, ditches, and dams in 1862. In order to avoid further flooding, Jacob Hamblin built a home on the Santa Clara hill. Today one of the homes is owned by the Mormon Church as a museum and gives tours. Currently, approximately 6,000 people live in Santa Clara.
