Parowan Homes for Sale
Parowan, Utah is the county seat of Iron County. The city sits at the mouth of Parowan Canyon and Valentine Peak, a red-top mountain, overlooking the valley, a landmark for Parowan. The city was founded in 1851. The first settlers were sent by the Mormon church to plant crops to supply food for immigrants working the coal and iron ore deposits. A cotton mill, sawmill, tannery and furniture factories, as well as those for making saddles and harnesses, were also established. By the early 1900s sheep and dairy industries had also been created. The iron industry was not successful, but mining in the twentieth century brought prosperity to the area. When the mines closed, the businesses of Parowan began to support Brian Head, a resort south of town. Today there are approximately 3,000 people who live in Parowan.
Parowan hosts the annual Iron County Fair each Labor Day weekend, a favorite annual activity in the area. The Utah Summer Games are also held in Parowan, as does the Christmas in the Country celebration which takes place each November. A favorite place to visit in Parowan is Heritage Park. Beyond the park, the site has statues that commemorate the founders of Parowan, as well as a grotto and pond. Historical sites in the original town square are proudly on display, while the Parowan Community Theatre has theater productions throughout the year. Additional outdoor adventures can be found in the many state and national parks, as well as Brian Head Resort, where you can downhill ski, cross-country ski, and enjoy numerous activities during the warmer months. And all of these delightful features make Parowan a sought after address in the area.
